About Historic Ogle Hall
An Event Venue with History
Ogle Hall was built in 1739 by Dr. William Stephenson, a surgeon, who later sold the house to the Ogle family. Samuel Ogle served as Governor of Maryland from 1747 until his death in 1752, and later his son, Benjamin Ogle, was elected Governor in 1798. In his diary, George Washington described dining with Benjamin Ogle here in 1773, and later, when the Marquis de Lafayette visited Annapolis, he declared the ballroom of Ogle Hall, “the most beautiful in America.” A third Governor of Maryland resided here, Thomas Pratt. In 1946, on the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Naval Academy, Ogle Hall was purchased by the Naval Academy Alumni Association, and it has been the Alumni House since 1947.
The building is a Georgian-style mansion which features distinct 18th-century craftsmanship in the exterior brickwork. Interior details like the cantilevered hallway staircase and the ornate ballroom cornice are found only in the finest houses of the period. The rooms are furnished with antiques and fine reproductions and lighted with Waterford and Tiffany crystal chandeliers. The original wood floors are protected by Persian rugs, and the rooms also showcase several rare grandfather clocks. The paintings are on loan from the U.S. Naval Academy Museum. Our extended history
